Specialist qualifications awarded by the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, and their accredited training centres.
A Fellowship of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (written “FC” followed by the discipline, for example FCS(SA) in surgery) is the specialist qualification awarded by the constituent colleges of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA). Together with registration as a specialist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), it allows a doctor to practise in a recognised medical or surgical specialty.
Fellowships are earned during accredited registrar (specialist) training at teaching hospitals. The CMSA assessment is typically staged: commonly a Primary examination early in training, an Intermediate examination, and a Final (exit) examination. The exact structure, eligibility and syllabus are set by each college and differ between disciplines.
The list below shows the fellowships tracked on Placemint and the facilities accredited for each. Because requirements are updated periodically, confirm the current regulations with the relevant CMSA college before making decisions.
