Guide
Every ICSP window in one place — when applications open and close, when results land, and what you should be doing at each step — with the current 2027-cycle dates verified on the official portal and the pattern from past cycles for everything still marked TBC.
Last updated Cycle dates are set per cycle and change: everything here was read on the official ICSP portal on 20 August 2026, and TBC rows are the portal's own wording. The portal (icsp-doh.org.za) and the cycle circular are binding — check them before relying on any deadline.
We summarise publicly documented facts in our own words and cite the source, so always confirm the current details with the primary source before you rely on them. See our methodology.
ICSP 2027 annual cycle
Verified 20 August 2026 on the ICSP applicant portal (2027 Annual Cycle page). Later dates (results, swops, appeals) are still TBC — the portal is binding.
The official portal’s 2027 Annual Cycle page (checked 20 August 2026) lists two dated windows and marks everything after them TBC. If you did not complete self-registration in the July window, contact the ICSP helpdesk before assuming you can still apply — the portal is the only authority on whether late registration is possible.
| Phase | 2027 cycle dates | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Self-registration & verification | 6 July 2026 – 22 July 2026 | Create your portal profile and get documents verified (this window has closed — contact the helpdesk if you missed it). |
| Post application (rank your five choices) | 18 August 2026 – 31 August 2026 | Log in, apply and rank up to five preferences before the window closes. |
| Preliminary results released | TBC on the portal — the 2025 annual results were announced 29 November 2024 | Log in to view and accept your allocated post. |
| Swop window | TBC on the portal — swop mechanics are set per cycle | Only open to applicants placed outside their five choices; per the portal, an unsuccessful swop may return to the original allocation and accept it, or appeal. |
| Appeal applications & results | TBC on the portal | Appealing forfeits your allocated post — read the rules before applying. |
| Duty starts | 1 January intake for the annual cycle (per the programme's standing pattern) | Complete assumption-of-duty paperwork early — late capture delays your first salary. |
| Dated rows were read on the official portal (20 August 2026); amber rows are the portal’s own “TBC” or the pattern from cited past cycles. The portal and the cycle circular are binding. | ||
Three rules on the portal’s cycle page change how you should rank: applicants allocated within their five choices will not be permitted to swop or appeal; applying for an appeal forfeits your allocated post; and withdrawing removes you from the cycle entirely. In other words, your five preferences are close to binding — only rank facilities you’d genuinely accept. How to rank well is covered in our ICSP guide, and the department retains the final say: placement remains the employer’s prerogative under the Public Service Act, particularly toward under-served and rural areas.
The mid-year cycle exists for people who couldn’t be placed in the annual round — late academic results, late internship completion, or no funded post. The pattern: mid-year duty has started in July (17 July in 2024, 1 July in 2023), and in 2023 the allocations were announced in late June — only days before the start. It is much smaller than the annual round — the 2026 mid-year cycle placed 625 health professionals (161 medical interns and 464 community-service practitioners, including 239 doctors), per the NDoH statement of 7 July 2026 — and there’s a hard eligibility edge: in 2023 the department was explicit that final-year students who became eligible after 1 July could only be allocated in the following January cycle. Going by past cycles, the 2027 mid-year window’s dates should be published on the portal in the first half of 2027.
The shape repeats every cycle, even as the dates move.
Portal profile, ID and qualification documents — verification happens before applications open, in its own window. Miss it and the helpdesk is your only route.
Rank only posts you’d accept — under the 2027 rules a top-five allocation can’t be swopped or appealed. Shortlist with the internship or community-service quiz.
Results land on the portal — the 2025 annual results were announced on 29 November 2024. Log in, view, and accept — going silent can forfeit the post.
Only for applicants placed outside their five choices, and an appeal forfeits your post. The full decision tree is in the not-placed guide.
Phases per the ICSP portal’s 2027 Annual Cycle page and NDoH cycle statements; dates change per cycle — the portal is binding.
Two places, in order of authority: the applicant portal at icsp-doh.org.za (the cycle pages carry the dated windows; the same login handles applications, results and appeals), and the NDoH’s circulars and statements at health.gov.za/icsp. System emails come from dhis@icsp.org.za — whitelist it and check spam, because verification and results notices land there. Helpdesk: icsp@health.gov.za or 087 012 5082 (see official contacts).
